Wake Up Calculator
Enter the time you're going to bed. We'll calculate the best times to wake up so you finish at the end of a 90-minute sleep cycle โ not in the middle of deep sleep.

How wake-up time is calculated
The calculator adds 14 minutes for sleep onset, then counts forward in 90-minute increments. The four options you get back are:
- 3 cycles / 4.5 hours โ emergency. Survive the night.
- 4 cycles / 6 hours โ minimum viable, you'll feel it by mid-afternoon.
- 5 cycles / 7.5 hours โ recommended. Wake feeling like a person.
- 6 cycles / 9 hours โ full rest. Best when you've been under-sleeping.
Why you can't train yourself to need less
The "I only need 5 hours" crowd is mostly wrong. Van Dongen's 2003 meta-analysis showed that adults who consistently sleep 6 hours or fewer for two weeks perform as badly on cognitive tests as people who are legally drunk โ even though they feel subjectively alert. There's no adaptation. The deficit accumulates silently.
If you have to wake up before 6 cycles
Sometimes life requires it. Two mitigations: (1) set your alarm for a cycle boundary, not for a specific time โ your body will tolerate waking between cycles much better. (2) take a 20-minute power nap at the circadian dip (1โ3 PM) the next day to recover a fraction of the deficit. You won't fully repay the debt, but you will function.
