Repeated waking at the same time may be linked to your natural sleep cycles, circadian rhythm or a consistent environmental trigger. Noise, temperature changes, pets, a partner's movements or the need to urinate can occur at similar times each night. Alcohol may cause waking as it is metabolized, while stress can make the brain more alert during normal brief awakenings. Other possible causes include sleep apnea, reflux, pain, hot flashes and medication effects. Waking briefly is common, but difficulty returning to sleep may become reinforced if you check the clock and worry. Keep a sleep diary to identify patterns. Seek medical advice if waking is frequent, prolonged or accompanied by snoring, choking, pain or severe daytime fatigue.
