What is a good sleep cycle time?

An optimal 90-minute sleep cycle — a clean sweeping arc with a glowing check mark

A typical sleep cycle lasts around 80 to 100 minutes, with 90 minutes commonly used as an average. However, there is no single cycle duration that is better than another. Cycle length changes throughout the night and differs between individuals. What matters is moving through a healthy balance of light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep over enough total hours. Most adults experience approximately four to six cycles per night when they receive adequate sleep. You cannot easily control how long each cycle lasts. Rather than trying to create a perfect 90-minute cycle, focus on regular sleep timing, sufficient duration and an environment that minimizes interruptions. Persistent poor-quality sleep should be evaluated based on symptoms, not merely a calculator result.
